2010 Refund Filing

2010 Refund Filing

Hurry up and file your 2010 federal income tax return for 2010 if you have not done so and are in a position to get a refund! The IRS has said that they have $760 million dollars just waiting to be handed over to over 900,000 taxpayers who have not filed for that year. If the return is not filed by Tuesday, April 15, 2014, you lose the right under the law to claim your refund. The IRS estimates that half the potential refunds are for amounts greater than $571. Even if your income was small enough that a return was not required, if you had income tax withheld or paid estimated taxes, you are entitled to get that money back. There is no penalty for late filing if you owe no tax or are due a refund. Your refund could be held up if you haven’t filed for 2011 or 2012 and it could be applied to outstanding amounts still owed to the IRS or your state tax agency. It could also be used to offset child support payments or other federal debts like student loan payments that you owe. It is very simple to get prior year forms on the Forms and Publications page of IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAXFORM (800-829-3676). If you do not have your W-2s, 1099s or 1098s for 2010 and cannot get them from the payors, request a transcript from the IRS by using the Get Transcript service at IRS.gov.
